FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

To buy a suppressor, you need to:

  • Choose between buying as an individual or through a trust.
  • Select a dealer, as you must go through a licensed dealer to make the purchase.
  • Submit a Form 4 to the ATF for approval.
  • Wait for approval from the ATF.

Certain states have restrictions on suppressors. Check out How to Buy for more details.

  • Individual: You are the sole owner of the suppressor and responsible for all legal requirements. No other person can use it without you present.
  • Trust: A legal entity that allows multiple people (trustees) to possess and use the suppressor. This option is beneficial if you want family members or others to have access to the suppressor.

The process involves four steps:

  1. Select a Suppressor: Choose from a wide range of options on the site.
  2. Find a Dealer: SilencerCo will help you find a local dealer to handle the transfer.
  3. Submit Paperwork: Complete and submit the required Form 4 to the ATF.
  4. Wait for Approval: Once your paperwork is approved, you can pick up your suppressor.
  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You need to provide a valid government-issued ID.
  • You must be a legal U.S. resident and comply with federal and state laws regarding firearms ownership.

A tax stamp is required by the ATF for the transfer of any NFA item, including suppressors. It is a federal requirement as part of the application process when submitting a Form 4.

Starting January 1st, 2026 the tax stamp is free.

A Form 3 is used to transfer suppressors between licensed dealers. It doesn’t involve the buyer and is usually quicker than a Form 4.

A Form 4 is the document that must be submitted to the ATF for approval when transferring a suppressor to an individual or trust. This form is essential for the legal transfer of the suppressor.

Wait times can vary, but recently the ATF has been approving them in a few days, and forms with a Trust within a few weeks.

If you’re looking for more details, visit Current Processing Times on the ATF’s website.

You can find the thread pitch by:

  • Checking your gun’s manual.
  • Contacting the manufacturer for specifications.
  • Keep in mind that thread pitches may vary based on where the firearm was manufactured (e.g., metric vs. imperial measurements).
  • Alpha: Threads 1.125 x 28, used on some specific models.
  • Bravo: Threads 1.375 x 24, the most common universal mount, works with SilencerCo, Banish, DeadAir, and others.
  • Charlie: Threads 1.375 x 32, another common mount for different suppressors.
  • Delta: 1/2 x 28, typically used for rimfire firearms.
  • Echo: Used for 12 gauge shotguns.
  • ASR Muzzle Devices: 20-30 foot-pounds.
  • 3-Lug Mounts: 15 foot-pounds.
  • Charlie Mounts: 25-35 foot-pounds, due to the tapered mount interface requiring precise torque.
  • Sex Bolts (Maxim, Salvo, Osprey Micro): 45 inch-pounds.

The baffle design improves suppressor performance slightly and is aesthetically pleasing. For more details, you can watch this video on baffle design.
