Why purchase a Suppressor?

There are a few major benefits to owning suppressors:

They reduce the sound of gun fire to help protect your hearing. Suppressors also serve as a natural muzzle break and flash hider, so that you experience better accuracy and control over your firearm by reducing recoil, while also not blinding you in low light environments with flash.

All of this has the added benefit of reducing concussion. Which is the total impact on your body. A lot of people don’t realize that even when wearing ear protection, firing a gun reverberates through your body violently, which can still do damage to your hearing, muscles, and joints. Suppressors massively improve the shooting experience, especially for people who are intimidated by their guns and how it feels to shoot. Having a suppressor makes shooting far more enjoyable for people who are impacted harder by concussion.

The last benefit is that suppressors reduce your presence to other shooters or animals when hunting.

Something to keep in mind is that suppressors do not make your gun sound like they do in the movies. Guns are loud, and while suppressors help reduce the sound considerably, it doesn’t eliminate the sound entirely.

If you’re still unsure about how much of a beneficial impact suppressors have, we encourage you to visit our Events Page on our website. SilencerCo hosts many live fire events each year all throughout the states where you can come hear and feel our suppressors in action and see for yourself how much of a difference a suppressor can make to purify your shooting experience

What is the National Firearms Act (NFA)? A Brief History

The first commercial suppressor was made in 1902 by Hyrum Maxim, and when they were first made, there was no regulation on them. You could buy one as easily as buying groceries at the store. Today, we have the National Firearms Act, commonly referred to as the NFA, that has made suppressors harder to buy than most guns.

The National Firearms Act was passed in 1934, and marked the start of the US government regulating firearms. Unfortunately, gun suppressors were included. The NFA requires that to purchase a suppressor you have to go through the ATF, the Bureau of Alcohol Tabacco Firearms and Explosives, and pay a $200 Tax Stamp. While that doesn’t seem excessive in today’s money, keep in mind that in 1934 when the law was passed, that was equivalent to about $4,500 in 2023.

The NFA still regulates the selling and transfer of suppressors today and has made it so that purchasing a suppressor is a process that can take months. As such, purchasing a suppressor is not like purchasing a gun. Each suppressor you buy is a lifetime purchase, which is why it so important to us as a manufacturer to offer suppressors that last. SilencerCo has a lifetime warranty on all our suppressors.

Choosing who you purchase your suppressors from is vital. When you make that choice, you’re going to be involved with that company for the long haul, which means when you join the SilencerCo family, we promise to be there for you until the end. If you ever have a baffle strike, you can come directly to us and get your suppressor fixed. Shit happens, and when it does, you’ll know that you’re covered for life. We have more suppressors in the publics hand than any other manufacturer, and we are and will remain a staple in the suppressor industry.

How to Purchase a Suppressor

The NFA still regulates the purchasing and transferring of suppressors. To purchase a suppressor, you must pay the $200 tax stamp, have your fingerprints and a photo take, and submit an ATF Form 4 to get approved for the suppressor to be transferred into your possession.

When you go into a dealer to purchase a suppressor, they will walk you through the process. Dealers know exactly how to make the process easy and smooth for you.

Owning a suppressor is legal in 42 states. The states that suppressors are not legal in are:

  • California
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Rhode Island
  • And in the District of Columbia

Vermont was mentioned in this video, however Vermont has legalized the ownership and use of silencers while hunting as of July 2022 – our apologies for the error in our video. If you are a resident in Vermont, you can now purchase suppressors at a dealer. Please keep an eye out for when SilencerCo suppressors become available near you.

If you’re considering purchasing a suppressor, the best time to do it is now as wait times can vary wildly for the ATF to approve your form. The ATF is always trying to improve their process, but the sooner you get in the queue, the sooner you can be at the range or in the mountains hunting with your suppressor.

If you don’t know where to find a dealer that offers suppressors, see the link in the description to our Dealer Locator at SilencerCo.com. All you need to do is put in your zip code, and it will locate registered dealers that offer SilencerCo suppressors near you.
