The mighty .45. “America’s caliber” since 1873. It comes in many versions, whether it be .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, or whatever. But few cartridges equal the esteem in which American shooters hold the original .45 Colt, John Browning’s .45 ACP, or the beefy .45-70 Gov’t.

The .45 ACP and .45-70 Gov’t, in particular, are still very prominent for self-defense and big game hunting, respectively. .45 ACP proponents like to say that bad guys shot with their favorite cartridge tend to “stay shot,” compared to 9mm or other defensive rounds. And the .45-70, while no longer a military cartridge, is still a mainstay for Western guides and those hardy souls who pursue big bears, buffalo, moose, and elk.

Those two cartridges have been around for well over a century, but modern shooting options abound, including suppressors.

It so happens that SilencerCo makes some of the best .45 suppressors around. I know this because they kindly let me shoot a suppressed Marlin 1895 chambered in .45-70 a couple years ago.

I would never have believed how effectively a .45 silencer could tame that rifle had I not experienced it myself. The suppressor not only reduced the noise, but it also eased the recoil, helping me shoot more accurately. I decided right then that I needed a big bore suppressor in my life.

I would never have throught this Marlin .45-70's recoil would be tame. But that Hybrid 46M did the job. Notice the lack of ear protection. It was QUIET. (Sara Liberte Photography)

So, let’s look at SilencerCo’s .45 caliber suppressors and the firearms for which each is best suited.

How We Chose the Best .45 Suppressors

Any equipment choice will be subjective to a point. We like what we like, after all. But understanding our equipment, silencers in this case, provides context for why one choice might be better than another. And each of SilencerCo’s three .45 caliber suppressors has unique features that allow us to make those informed choices.

Our recommendations are based on versatility, modularity, and big bore applications, as well as how a specific silencer works on various firearm platforms. That Marlin 1895, for example, will have different requirements than a 1911 pistol, though you could certainly use the same one, so long as it’s properly rated. But this is about what we believe to be the best choice, as opposed to a “one size fits all” approach.

Best .45 Caliber Suppressors for 2025

So, without further ado, here are our recommendations for the best applications for SilencerCo’s .45 caliber suppressors for 2025, based on the factors listed above.

Best Overall .45 Caliber Suppressor: Hybrid 46M

The Hybrid 46M is SilencerCo’s most versatile suppressor, working with pistol calibers from 9mm Luger to .45 ACP and rifle calibers from 5.56 NATO to .460 Weatherby Magnum. That includes the .45-70 Gov’t we mentioned earlier.

That versatility is enhanced by the Hybrid 46M’s modularity. The front module is easily removed for a more compact pistol accessory, though it also works on rifles, including the big bores. The full suppressor, of course, is more effective on those guns, but the Hybrid 46M lets you decide for yourself.

The Hybrid 46M is lightweight and durable, thanks to its titanium, Inconel, and stainless-steel construction. It’s full auto-rated and can handle those big magnum cartridges. This silencer was designed for hard use on multiple platforms. It delivers 137 decibels for .45 ACP and 140.7 for .45-70 Gov’t. It’s perhaps the most versatile suppressor on the market today, and we judge it the best .45 caliber suppressor overall.

The Hybrid 46M is a modular centerfire rifle suppressor with the versatility to use on most rifles, pistols, and submachine guns.

Best .45 ACP Pistol Suppressor: Osprey 45 2.0

The Osprey 45 2.0 is shorter, being designed for pistols, pistol caliber carbines, or personal defense weapons. The unique polygonal shape offers increased sound suppression via its increased internal volume and monocore baffle design, delivering an impressive 130.4 decibels with .45 ACP rounds.

The Osprey’s performance can be further enhanced by running it “wet.” That temporary enhancement is achieved by inserting 5cc of clean water or clear wire pulling gel into the Osprey’s back.

A push button locking system ensures quick indexing onto the firearm, making alignment simpler and more reliably repeatable, even after removing the Osprey from the firearm. The Osprey’s polygonal design also allows for standard height sights on your firearm. The lightweight Osprey is constructed of high-grade aluminum and 17-4 stainless steel.

Best .45-70 Gov’t Suppressor: Hybrid 46M

Hybrid 46M. We’ve already looked at the Hybrid 46M’s versatility, but why do we say it’s the best for the .45-70 Gov’t? Well, versatility plays a role here, too. .45-70 rifles tend to be big and fairly heavy. They have to be. That .45-70 round is no joke, especially with the new Spitzer bullets offering higher velocities and better terminal ballistics.

The Hybrid 46M offers the option of a full-size silencer for top performance or a shorter version for a more compact package. Either way, the Hybrid 46M is up to the task of reducing noise and recoil. Finally, the Hybrid 46M doesn’t have to be married to your .45-70 Gov’t rifle. As we noted, it works on lots of other firearms too.

Durability is another factor. We said that .45-70 rifles are beefy, and a suppressor purporting to tame that round better be well-constructed. Titanium, Inconel, and stainless steel. Any questions?

The Hybrid 46M is built to take the punishment a big-bore rifle dishes out with every shot. And it's 12.2 to 14.9 oz. weight won’t add much to the rifle’s overall heft.

Best Big Bore Rifle Suppressor: Hybrid 46 DT

If you’re looking for a dedicated big bore rifle suppressor, look no further than the Hybrid 46 DT. It shares the Hybrid 46M’s caliber diversity, up to .460 Weatherby Magnum, but is perhaps better suited for being a dedicated big bore rifle suppressor.

It’s rated for full auto fire, though a big bore application likely doesn’t require that. It does, however, speak to the Hybrid 46 DT’s strength and durability when handling powerful cartridges, including magnums, for which it’s also rated.

The titanium, Inconel, and stainless-steel construction is light (14.1 oz.) and robust, providing performance without unduly weighing down your rifle. That performance includes 140.6 decibels for .45-70 Gov’t and 138.3 decibels for .458 SOCOM cartridges. There simply isn’t a better big bore silencer than the Hybrid 46 DT.
