The Omega 36M: Modular Versatility
Kat Ainsworth Stevens
The days when having a suppressor meant a single, dedicated can for your each gun are long gone — and that’s a good thing. After all, it’s both useful and more budget-friendly to own a suppressor that’s capable of being used with multiple calibers.
But what if you want one that offers you a choice in length? What if you want a quick detach option? Then you need to check out SilencerCo’s Omega 36M, a multicaliber, modular can that’s functional and fantastic on pistols, rifles, and submachine guns.
If you only ever get one suppressor, the Omega 36M is a stellar choice — and I’m going to tell you why.
The SilencerCo Omega 36M
The SilencerCo Omega 36M is a fully welded suppressor that’s compatible with a wide range of calibers. It’s designed to be modular and offers two possible overall lengths, the shorter of which tends to be ideal for handguns.
This model is made to be ideal for a broad range of shooters who need a suppressor that can practically do it all. It goes seamlessly from hunting to long-range shooting to shooting Bill Drills with your favorite handgun.
Features and Design
18As with all suppressors made by SilencerCo, the Omega 36M is designed and manufactured with close attention to detail. That means it’s made with quality, durable materials — in this case, that includes Cobalt 6, Inconel, Titanium, and 17-4 Stainless Steel.
The Omega 36M has an overall length of 6.85 inches and weighs 12.5 ounces in its full configuration. The short configuration is a more easily maneuverable platform at 4.9 inches long and weighs 9.8 ounces. Both lengths provide good decibel reduction with the precise amount depending on caliber, barrel length, and the ammunition being used.
It’s rated for use with calibers up to 338 Lapua Magnum and 350 Legend. As for barrel length recommendations:
- If your gun’s chambered in 223 Remington/5.56 NATO, it’s rated down to a 10.0-inch barrel.
- Guns in 308 Winchester are rated for use down to a 16.0-inch barrel.
- For fans of 300 Winchester Magnum, barrels lengths as short 18.0 inches are compatible.
- Guns chambered in 338 Lapua Magnum are fine with the Omega 36M if the barrel length is not shorter than 18.0-inches.
How Mount the Omega 36M to your Gun
One of my favorite things about the Omega 36M is its compatibility with the Charlie ASR (Active Spring Retention) Mount. This mount has a locking ring that can be secured into place after the suppressor is fully screwed onto the gun.
You need an ASR muzzle device to use this mount, and I opted for the ASR Muzzle Brake that has a trio of ports on either side. The ASR Muzzle Brake attaches to your threaded barrel just like any other brake — make sure you check threading for compatibility — so you just remove the old device or thread protector and screw this one on.
The Charlie ASR Mount then screws in place thanks to the threads at the base of the ASR Muzzle Brake. When it’s screwed fully into place, you rotate the locking ring from “unlocked” to “locked” and it’s ready for use.
What’s nice about the Charlie ASR Mount is that it locks into place — so there’s no possible shifting — and it fits over a muzzle device. That means you won’t have exposed threads when you remove the suppressor. The threads are always protected, which is an extra layer of security and versatility that’s user-friendly.
Shooting and Hunting with the Omega 36M
Mounted to my SIG Cross — which is primarily for hunting — I opted for the full length of the Omega 36M. It attached quickly, stayed locked in place once I secured the locking ring, and delivered great sound suppression.
The Omega 36M isn’t so long that it caused issues in my deer hunting blind — I’ve had some suppressed rifles be far too lengthy for easy maneuvering — and it was easy to shift the gun out the window when necessary.
Another nice bonus of deer hunting suppressed is you’re less likely to shoot up a field in a way that discourages other animals from coming around for some time. Deer especially are sensitive to the sound of gunfire, so using something like the Omega 36M is perfect for reducing your noise footprint in a given area.
And if you’re hunting feral hogs — something I do frequently — the Omega 36M makes it a lot easier to drop multiple hogs in a row. Unlike the boom generated by an unsuppressed shot, suppressed gunfire is reduced to a level that gives you time to take another shot at a sounder.
No, it isn’t Hollywood silent — it never is, that’s a major misconception — but it’s quiet enough to keep the animals around for longer periods of time. Also, the Omega 36M is full-auto rated, so you really can drop a lot of feral hogs all at once with no worries about whether the suppressor can handle the rapid fire.
This isn’t a bulky suppressor by any definition. On my rifles — including bolt-actions and AR-10s — it’s great in its full length. It doesn’t disturb the balance or cause issues with line of sight or field of view. The same goes for pistols, in both full length and shortened length. It’s simply well-made and it neatly outperforms initial expectations (which were high to begin with).
A Personal Favorite
The SilencerCo Omega 36M is a personal favorite of mine because I can use it on a wide variety of guns and the quick mount on rifles is incredibly useful. Changing lengths is as easy as unscrewing the end cap and the longer middle section of the suppressor, then re-attaching the end cap to the remaining short base.
For handgunners such as myself, that shorter length is useful for a lot of drills and range work. It lets you cut decibels while maintaining a shorter overall length, which is preferable for a lot of skill-building exercises.
If you want a versatile suppressor, you should be taking a good look at the Omega 36M. It really is that fantastic.
